Hydrogen Ferries arrive in Norway

A CLIMATE PROJECT IN THE GREEN ZONE

Torghatten Nord has signed a contract with the Norwegian Public Road Administration to operate hydrogen ferries between Bodø and Lofoten from 2025. The work to be carried out for the first ferry trip will be of great importance in Norway and the world, offering local business opportunities. In early October 2025 Torghatten Nord will start construction of two hydrogen vessels and convert two ferries delivered in 2012 from natural gas (LNG) to low-emission solutions.

According to Norway’s Torghatten Nord, these ferries will be exposed to the elements, completing long routes from a global ecological point of view. This will have a domino effect for the Norwegian hydrogen industry and the maritime industry. Norway becomes a major purchaser of hydrogen, thus providing opportunities for the shipyard and equipment industry to participate in the development of competencies in the use of hydrogen as an energy source.

EQT, OWNER OF TORGHATTEN GROUP, SEES THE CONTRACT AS A MILESTONE.

It is necessary to set targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Until now it has been responsible for ferry transport, but now it will take the lead in the development of hydrogen as an energy source for transport in Norway. This will have global consequences by achieving net zero emissions in maritime transport. However, they will ensure the operational safety of the ferries outside the summer season, thus taking into account the fishing industry.
